Cultural assessment essay

A woman who comes into the urgent care center with a young child tries to explain to the nurse that her child is ill. She struggles to communicate in English but is able to make herself understood. The child is obviously in some distress; she is crying and tugging at her ears, and her mother is unable to comfort her. The mother explains that she has only been in this country for about 5 years but that she understands English. The nurse determines that language is not a barrier to communication. An assessment of the child reveals that she has bilateral middle ear infection (otitis media) and a prescription is given for an oral liquid antibiotic. The mother is also instructed to use acetaminophen (Tylenol) drops for the child’s fever and ear pain. When the mother is given information about the diagnosis and treatment, she indicates that she understands. The next day the mother arrives back at the urgent care center with the child who is still in distress and inconsolable despite the mother’s attentiveness. The child is examined and found to have colored discharge from both ears. The mother indicates that she had been giving the child the liquid antibiotic orally as directed but that she was administering the acetaminophen drops directly to the child’s ears. Upon further assessment, the nurse determines that the mother had previously treated the child’s ear infections with ear drops and assumed that the same was to be done with the acetaminophen drops. At this point the nurse determines the mother’s native language and calls an interpreter to assist in providing clear information and directions for the child’s care. Directions: Use the information provided in the case study to write a 4- to 6-page paper in which all of the following is addressed: 1.Select an appropriate model for cultural assessment and describe the key components of the model. Use the components of this model to complete the remainder of this assignment. 2.Identify and describe key information needed in order to perform an adequate cultural assessment of the mother and child in the case study. 3.Consider the different cultures and ethnicities found in your local community and assume this family is of a culture or ethnicity found in your local community. Identify the beliefs, health issues, and health behaviors (practices) related to that culture. Explain the implications the culture’s beliefs, health issues, and health behaviors have for you as a professional nurse. 4.Identify and analyze those areas in which improved cultural awareness may have enhanced the care given to the family in the case study. 5.Discuss the relevance of cultural awareness, sensitivity, and competence for you as a professional nurse. Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Support your findings with examples and scholarly references. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
