Nurses may experience moral distress when faced with ethical dilemmas in the work environment. Ethical decision-making models allow nurses to process situations
and develop options based on all the factors. a. Reflect on your personal values. b. Consider how your values influence your professional decision-making. c. Recall
a nursing experience when you were faced with an ethical dilemma. (My example: I take care of a very young women of the Jehovah Witness religion who lost a lot
of blood during delivery and because of her religious beliefs she was not able to receive a blood transfusion. Her husband and mother were at the bedside with her
crying and watching her die. This woman and her family were choosing not to get a transfusion that could have possibly saved her life. My personal values or my
core beliefs that I hold true to my life as a mom and as a nurse include doing my best in caring for my family with a purpose and the same for me as a nurse. I had to
honor this woman and her family decision and their rights but I did struggle morally with my own feeling about their choices)
d. Identify the feelings that you experienced during this time. e. Review the ethical decision-making models. f. Choose an ethical decision-making model you feel
comfortable using. g. In a 6-7 page paper: i. Briefly summarize a nursing experience when you were faced with an ethical dilemma. For confidentiality, please do not
use names of people or institutions. ii. Discuss the moral distress you experienced during this dilemma. iii. Apply an ethical decision-making model to the experience.
iv. How does your spirituality affect the ethical considerations when caring for clients? v. Compare and contrast your initial actions in this dilemma to the conclusion
developed when applying the ethical decision-making model. Describe your role as a patient advocate in this situation.
