Human Body – Reply to Discussion post, biology homework help

  • After reading the classmate initial discussion post below, research and report on an opposing view. After reviewing both positions, what are your thoughts?

“Antibiotic resistance is when bacteria develop the ability to survive exposure to antibiotics designed to kill them or stop their growth. Antibiotic resistance occurs due to changes in the DNA of the bacteria, or the acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes from other bacterial species through horizontal gene transfer. These changes enable the bacteria to survive the effects of antibiotics designed to kill them. This means that when an antibiotic is used, all the bacteria that have not undergone a mutation are killed, while the antibiotic resistant bacteria remain unaffected. The antibiotic resistant bacteria will continue to divide and grow producing even more bacteria that are not affected by the antibiotic.

The complications can occur from antibiotic resistance, both in humans and in livestock infections, new drug use and problem tracking infections together with resistance. Yes we should decrease the use of antibiotic on human and livestock because when these drugs are overused by humans or animals, some bacteria become antibiotic-resistant, threatening the future effectiveness of these medicines.”
