IAD 452: IAD STUDIO VI – THESIS 1
KITCHEN ANALYSIS
Using the book, Kitchen Planning as a resource, students will gather pertinent
information that will inform their designs. Based on the reading form chapters 1-4:
List key design implications you will consider for your design.
KITCHENS YOU KNOW
To begin in our kitchen analysis, we will start by determining what we know
based on the kitchens you use in your everyday lives.
1. Sketch the layouts of two kitchens and supporting spaces (if applicable). First, the
kitchen you grew up in. Second, the kitchen you use or have access to now.
Label the kitchen, add notes to indicate where key appliances and essential
items are located (microwave, stove, sink, refrigerator, dish washer, garbage
disposal, trash can, base/wall cabinets, pantries, cofffe pot, toaster, etc.)
2. Additional information to list about the kitchens:
a. Number of people using kitchen
b. List of major and small appliances in both kitchens
c. Best thing about each kitchen

MAJOR GOALS AND CONCEPTS – DUE: JANUARY 24, 2018
Based on the research from chapter 1-4 above, come up with 3 major goals and
objectives (design moves that answer how to achieve goals) that will be your
focus as you design the kitchen project.
 Each goal should have at least 3 objectives
 Objectives are the start of your research. They are how experts say you can
achieve your goal
 You must also turn in notes/answers to bullets above related to chapters 1-4
Organizational and character concepts establish the underlying principles that
will be carried through in the design. They should be concise statements that
describe principle ideas for functional and aesthetic aspects of design.
Character – overarching idea that guides design decisions related to the
environment and mood; surface qualities, lighting, equipment in space.
ENGAGE & EXPLORE – DUE: JANUARY 29, 2018
Once you narrow down your goals, find additional research/information about
how to achieve your goals. Bullet and summarize the articles/information and
include application.
Search for visual images that will serve as precedence for you design. Think
about lighting, layout, materials, color, historic references, etc. All images must
be annotated.
