Imagine that you have chosen the Linotype machine or Ottmar Mergenthaler as the topic for your Final Research Essay assignment. Find a published source (either primary or secondary) that provides information about the Linotype machine or Ottmar Mergenthaler (or both). The source could be a book, a journal essay, a magazine or newspaper article, correspondence by Mergenthaler himself, a patent, a diagram or anything else that you are able to locate.

we will watch the film Linotype: In Search of the Eighth Wonder of the World (2012). . The film describes a “second printing revolution” inaugurated by the invention of Ottmar Mergenthaler’s Linotype machine which quickly replaced the Gutenberg’s printing press. It also provides a window into the world of the individuals who use and maintain the Linotype machines. Using the Information Literacy practices and skills that were introduced in Tuesday’s class, please do the following:

1.Imagine that you have chosen the Linotype machine or Ottmar Mergenthaler as the topic for your Final Research Essay assignment.

Clearly identify the source. This includes determining if it is a primary or secondary source, identifying the author, the publisher, date of publication and publication type (for example, a book, journal, newspaper article or other type of publication).

2.Discuss and explain the content of the source. What information is the source attempting to convey? Do you think that it would serve as a useful source for your Research Essay?

Finally, identify at least one of the many examples of tacit knowledge on display in the film. Clearly explain how the example you provide exhibits the characteristics of tacit knowledge.

3.Address these points in a 300-400 word essay. Consult the “Citation and Bibliography Guide for Weekly Responses and Research Essays” document (posted on Blackboard) for guidance on finding a source. Note that there is a great deal of information available on this topic so many sources should be readily accessible. This exercise will prepare you for finding sources for your Research Essay.
