Assignment Objectives:

Student will research and become familiar with community resources in and around the Houston metropolitan area they potentially could offer a person or caregiver of a person diagnosed with a mental illness from each diagnostic category studied in this course.

Student will create and develop a portfolio of community resources available to address a wide variety of mental health issues across the lifespan.

Student will gain knowledge about no less than three community resources for each diagnostic or disorder category studied in this course.

For each diagnostic or disorder category addressed the student will describe specific services offered by the resource and what specific area of occupational functioning the services improve.

Read the assignment objectives and the following instructions thoroughly and familiarize yourself with the Grading Rubric before attempting to begin this assignment.

Use the Internet to research and find out about community resources that address mental health in the Houston area to address each diagnostic category or disorder studied in this course. (See the list below for details)

Identify resources that address mental health issues across the lifespan and take into consideration cultural and occupational client factors relevant to persons in all four stages of life: Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood, and Older Adulthood in the Houston area.

Identify at least 3 relevant and available resources for each of the following diagnostic or disorder categories (taken from the course schedule) that serve the Houston metropolitan and surrounding rural areas.

Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Schizophrenia Spectrum

Bipolar and Related Disorders: Bipolar I and Bipolar II

Depressive Disorders

Anxiety Disorders

Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders



Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders

Feeding and Eating Disorders

Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders

Sleep-Wake Disorders

Neurocognitive Disorders (major and mild)

Personality Disorders

Develop a portfolio of well-organized and meaningful community resource information you can readily use as a competent OTA student and future OTA practitioner who is knowledgeable of available client resources.

Include the name, address, phone and fax numbers, contact name (if possible), and website link for each resource included in the portfolio.

Compile your portfolio of community resource information into a binder and as an electronic document.

Describe each resource you identify in terms of its name, location, details about services provided to what population along the lifespan, cost factors, etc. E.g. addresses what disorders and area(s) of psychosocial health and occupational functioning, disease prevention and/or management, support, transportation, protection against abuse, health promotion and wellness, OT assessments and interventions, etc.

If you are able to include a contact person and contact information such as phone number and email address, these would be a plus.

Submit your completed Resource Assignment in an organized and neatly prepared binder or presentation folder, and upload your electronic version on Blackboard by the due date and time.

The information should be typed, include graphics, be well organized, be interesting and appealing to read, and professionally presented using APA format. This means if you include information about resources, especially an intervention or assessment – please cite an evidence-based reference source that discusses the benefits of this resource for the elderly.

Cite three evidence based articles that give the rationale and support the use of the type of services offered by three of the community resources included in your portfolio. The PMI e-brary is available to facilitate your access to peer-reviewed research journals.

This assignment is worth 250 points. The Grading Rubric is below.

EBP research is evident via professional journals that are properly cited using APA format and relevant to occupational therapy for three of the resources you included in your portfolio serving three different populations in a residential, inpatient, outpatient, or day treatment community-based setting (60 points).
