Patient identification

One of the most fundamental functions of any HIM department is storage and maintenance of health data. The goal of any health record system is to enable retrieval of meaningful data that assists healthcare professionals in providing quality patient care. Paper systems require storage space, equipment and a system of record identification. Most record systems use a numerical filing system.

Explain the importance to have a proper identification and retrieval system within the facility for the purposes of security and confidentiality? What do you feel is the best strategy for the storage and maintenance of health data taking into consideration cost and efficiency? Do you feel there could be a more effective filing system than numerical?
