What are the unique needs for LGBT medical and/or mental health patients? Why do medical and/or mental health providers need specialty training to work with this population?

  • How are LGBT medical and/or mental health patients impacted when their health professionals aren’t competent? How is their health impacted?
  • Create a plan for how a public health worker could facilitate improved competence among professionals working with LGBT people; address the following:
    • What obstacles would make this task difficult (are these personal, financial, beliefs-based, etc.?)
    • How would you work to overcome these obstacles?
    • Discuss your plan for educating employees in public health at all levels (e.g., doctors, nursing assistants, clerical staff, etc.).
    • Consider the intervention and strategies to address these (community organizing)
