Week 3

Human Reproduction and Development

Week 3.jpg

Introduction:

Reproduction involves the transmission of genetic material from parent to offspring and development proceeds based on the instructions encoded in the inherited genetic material. In this module you will learn more about the reproduction and development process associated with humans.

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

– Describe the similarities and differences between egg and sperm production

– Identify common causes of infertility in males and females

– List the main events in human gestational development

– Discuss the processes and outcomes associated with assisted reproductive technologies

Resources:

Videos

This 2.5-minute video briefly describes the two types of cell divisions involved in reproduction and development. Mitosis is used to make all of your genetically identical body cells (every cell except egg and sperm cells) and meiosis is used to make genetically different sex cells (egg and sperm cells).

This 4-minute video provides an overview of egg and sperm production and explains how this process (meiosis) allows for genetic variation. This video also describes nondisjunction.

This 55-minute video presents the processes involved in human reproduction and development from conception to birth using high-tech photographic methods. Note: the birth process is shown at time 51:45-52:30.
