Research Proposal.

This week you will submit the Literature Review section of your proposal. Each week you have been adding to your growing body of evidence to support your problem and proposed innovation to address the problem. The review of literature is a critical, analytical summary and synthesis of the current knowledge of your research topic. Thus it should compare and relate different theories, findings, etc., rather than just summarize them individually.

Intervention: Deliver education and counseling to known gay or bisexual men about HIV.

Outcome: Decrease the occurrence of HIV in gays or bisexual men that have sex with other men.

Research question: Would voluntary counseling about HIV transmission in subjects between the ages of 13 and 34 who are gays or bisexual and having sex with other men would reduce the number of new diagnoses of HIV in this population?

Dependent variable: Reduction in the number of new HIV diagnoses in gay or bisexual men who have sex with other men.

Operational definition: Once subjects are identified who have not contracted HIV these subjects will subjected to counseling and will be required to return to the clinic with in a 3-month period for lab work and then again at 6 months.

Independent variable: Counseling and education on HIV transmission.

Operational definition of the independent variable includes: Creating a brochure that contains information on HIV, transmission, treatments options, risky behaviors that will be presented to the subjects in a one on one counseling for 60 minutes to allow time for the subjects to ask questions. Subjects will be asked to complete an evaluation to determine their understanding.

Research hypothesis: Education and counseling of gays and bisexual men who have sex with other men will decrease the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in this population

Null hypothesis: Education and counseling of gays and bisexual men who have sex with other men will not decrease the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in this population.
