Unit 1: Discussion 1 – Individual Summary and Career Planning Qualities


This discussion will provide you with the opportunity to get to know one another while demonstrating your ability to communicate effectively with a group.  Attention will be given to communication in the workplace, demonstration of individual interests and goals, as well as professional qualities that students wish to contribute to the workforce.


Respond to the topics listed below while keeping the requirements in mind.


  • Initial discussion posts – Your initial post should directly address all parts of the discussion requirement. Initial discussion posts should include a minimum of 150 words.
  • Response posts – A minimum of two response posts to your classmate or instructor is required.  Responses to your classmates or instructor should provide thoughtful insight to the topic, include information that directly relates to the course content and moves the group discussion forward in an effective manner.  Each response post should include a minimum of 100 words.
  • Writing – When crafting your posts, be considerate, resourceful, and pay special attention to the advancement of the discussion. Each post must demonstrate proper grammar, spelling, word usage and effective communication practices.
  • Critical thinking -Providing accurate information in your own words is imperative to the successful completion of this exercise.  You must demonstrate your understanding of the course content by providing responses that reflect evidence-based responses.
  • APA format – Write in your own words, otherwise, make sure that you cite (e.g., the textbook) in APA format and provide in-text citations for all paraphrased material used in your discussion posts.Textbook Reference:

Discussion topics for the week:

Part 1: Write a paragraph introducing yourself to the group.  Your introduction should address your background, professional interests and goals.  Feel free to share additional information such as hobbies and personal interests.  Use this portion of the discussion to create a personal summary that represents you as an individual.

Part 2: Share your current or future career field.  Identify three personal or professional attributes that you possess that are beneficial in your selected career field.   After identifying your career field and attributes, write a concise statement regarding how your attributes are beneficial in your chosen field.
