Must be a persuasive essay in MLA format about “A fourday
school and work week should be instituted to promote the
health of the American Family” (you agree with this)nwords from professor:nnThis week your assignment is to begin
drafting your persuasive essay. This document will give you instructions on how to do this and offer you a timeline of the
entire assignment. My advice to you is to print out this document and write down all due dates on your calendar.nThe
challenge here is to choose an angle that would serve you well if you were to flesh your writing out into a five or six page
essay. If your scope, or angle, is too large, you will not be able to persuade your reader sufficiently in your limited essay.
Many of the topics on the persuasive topics list I attached to the discussion board assignment are too broad. They are
designed for you to think through and find an angle that works for you. nMost issues have more than two sides to them.
Your goal, then, is to choose a topic for which you are able to clearly identify one angle in your claim. In order to
accomplish this, you want to avoid sweeping claims in your thesis. For example, if you were to argue that all American
workers should be required to submit to random drug testing, you would end up with too much to handle in an essay. I
would like to know if my brain surgeon was on something for obvious reasons, but there are very different reasons that fast
food workers may need to be tested randomly. If you were trying to argue in favor of this sweeping claim, you would find
yourself in a tangled web of supporting reasons, one having nothing to do with the other, having no way to build upon your
arguments, and end up lacking in persuasive appeal. The trick is, therefore, to choose one angle of an issue. nYou will
end up researching your topic and using sources in your essay to support your point. However, as a beginning step, we
will use the first draft of this essay to play around with a topic, find an appropriate angle, and think through your opinions
about the topic. Then, you will conduct your research. I ask you to complete the assignment in this way because the
research process can be overwhelming and can cause student writers to flounder in the sea of topic possibilities. Your
goal is to draw logical conclusions about your topic or problem without opening other doors to the issue, leaving gaps in
your discussion, or allowing an offtopic
issue to infiltrate your paper(this is very easy to do in persuasive writing and
something you want to avoid). Thinking through your issue and having a clear direction will hopefully allow you to
accomplish this.nYou will end up writing a 4 page essay, incorporating at least three outside sources (at least two of which
must be peer reviewed articles found in an academic database). Please do not be overwhelmed by the following list of
steps. I will give you plenty of guidelines as we work through the writing process. This document is intended to give you a
timeline of when each step will be due. Refer to it, and the resources it mentions, often. Most importantly, pay attention
