I don’t agree with locking them up and throwing away the key. I believe that If possible, to go through drug court. The reason I see it this way is because having some one with addiction going to prison there are rarely any programs to treat and help with the root of the problem. Addicts are not born with an addiction they usually head down that road due to many factors like environment society, trauma etc. we should try to give people a chance to recover and have a chance at living a healthy life. Being in a rehab facility vs a prison there is more normality to real life then in prison. This can also reduce the possibilities of the person from coming institutionalized. I have personally seen people end up in prison that have addiction and some one also going through drug court and going to a rehab facility and there is a huge difference not only in the resources between them but how it affects the person overall.

If I was having a conversation with an individual who had a statement such as “I think they should just lock them up and throw away the key” first of all I would be appalled, then I would give them a quick run down of the post-adjudicatory of the drug court expansion program and how it has not only benefited so many to get clean and save their lives through such a diverse program. Individuals who have successfully completed the program were 80% less likely to return to a life of drugs and crime or end up in prison. The efforts to implement a drug court program is not only to reduce the incarcerations of those who may suffer from a deeper unlined problem but to also reduce crime, recidivism, abuse and neglect cases by breaking the cycle of addiction. As of February 2019, Florida has 92 drug court programs in place for many different factors not just targeting any age or addiction as an umbrella of a problem. They have separated these programs into adult, juvenile, family dependency and 4 DUI courts and graduated 3,577 participants out of 6,195 with the success being more then half. A life of crime and addiction is not a way o live and to find the proper treatment program these day with all the red tape of insurance these programs are a God sent to many and I feel could just well be the biggest step the system has took yet to help a targeted problem.
