Correct formatting (12pt double-spaced, sensible font)

Separate cover page and reference page

Correctly cited sources (pick a standard and stick to it: APA, AMA, etc …)

Paper Content: Summarize the source article

Research related articles and present your research

Background information about the organism: species, biology

Other news about the organism: other events, research, medical impact 5 Total 40 points Format rubric details:

  • Your topic should be centered around a disease event (bacterial, viral or fungal) in recent years
  • o Focusing your work around one news article and a few associated articles helps

  • Your paper should be minimum 3, maximum ~5 pages of text
  • o Graphs or photos don’t count toward this number

o Expect to lose all 4 points if you run significantly under or over

    • Write 12pt double spaced, preferably in Times New Roman or similar

o You will lose points for very bad formatting

  • Add a cover page with your paper title, name, course and semester; and a separate reference section at the end of your paper
  • o Expect to lose all 4 points if either of these is missing

  • Cite your sources correctly o Pick a style and stick to it (see for example http://pitt.libguides.com/citationhelp)
  • o Use numbers in parentheses [e.g. (4)] or author and date [e.g. (Lippincott 2015)] to refer to citations in your text o Expect to lose a point for each individual citation error Content rubric details:

  • Summarize your main source article o Make sure to mention the time, place, organism, the impact of the disease, etc. • Present some research of related articles
  • o You don’t need to cover these in as much detail as your main source, but together this section should be about as long as the previous

    • Present some background information about the disease organism

o Include the type (bacterium, virus, fungus, archaeon) o Include some organism information (typical habitat and how it survives)

o Include some information about pathogenicity (how and when is it bad for humans?)

  • Present some followup/related information about the outbreak or organism, e.g.: o What were the long-term health impacts? o What was done to control or reverse the outbreak? o Did it lead to changes in law or practices? o Has there been new research on the organism since the outbreak? o Etc…
  • Try to keep these four sections roughly equal length • I will grade each section 1-5 points based on completeness and correctness: I will check the sources you cite and make a judgement whether you understood the source articles correctly and presented that information properly in your writing
  • Expect to lose a point for every factual error in your text
