What a chemical engineering can do for renewable energy?

In Eugene Cordero’s presentation, he stressed that we really need to take action to combat climate change

– that includes making technological change and social change. Think about the part engineers can play

in helping to make these changes. What can a chemical engineering do?

He showed examples of renewables such as solar panels, wind energy, etc.

Solar Power:

* There are conventional solar plants, however, we could have concentrated solar power

(CSP) plants, that use the simple technology of mirrors to concentrate a large area of

sunlight onto a small area This is efficient and a good return on investment. This is

different from conventional solar panels, but can still be part of the solution.

* “Spray-On” Solar is now being researched and is promising. This is something that

could be spayed on car windows, etc.

Wind Turbine:

Large and small scale solution. It is most-cost effective. We can have the large farms,

but there’s potential for the small-scale urban turbines that can be installed in cities

where there is a lot of wind.
